Adult IQ — International Students in America

Prepare for America • Understand the Systems • Make the Most of Your Experience

Coming to America to study can be a major opportunity, but it can also be overwhelming.

A new country means new systems, different expectations, unfamiliar costs, new responsibilities and everyday decisions you may never have had to make before.

The Adult IQ International Students in America Handbook was created to help international students prepare for the parts of American life that happen outside the classroom.

Whether you're preparing to arrive, have just arrived or have already been studying in the United States, this handbook is designed to give you practical information that can help you understand your surroundings, make more informed decisions and become more comfortable navigating everyday life in America.

Studying in another country is about much more than attending classes and earning a degree. You're also learning how to manage money, communicate with people from different backgrounds, find housing, get around, handle everyday responsibilities and become more independent.

It's About More Than College

Coming to America can be exciting, but there can also be a lot to figure out.

You may have questions about things that seem simple but are completely unfamiliar in a new country.

How do I open a bank account?
How does renting work?
How do I get around?
What does health insurance mean here?
How do I pay my bills?
What should I watch out for?
How do I communicate when something doesn't go as expected?

These are the types of everyday questions that can make the difference between simply getting through your experience and feeling more confident living in a new country.

International Students in America is designed to help bridge the gap between being academically prepared and being prepared for everyday life.

You'll learn about the systems and situations you're likely to encounter so you can approach them with more knowledge and less guesswork.

Build Confidence Away From Home

Living in another country can teach you independence in ways that a classroom can't.

You'll have to make decisions, manage responsibilities, solve problems and learn how things work for yourself.

You won't know everything—and you don't need to.

The goal is to give you a practical foundation that helps you know what questions to ask, what to look out for and where to look for reliable information when you need it.

Whether you're dealing with money, housing, transportation, healthcare, communication, employment or everyday responsibilities, having a better understanding of the environment around you can make the experience easier to navigate.
